'I've already heard...': Sheffield Wednesday legend explains what must be done to keep Danny Rohl

Carlton Palmer has explained what Sheffield Wednesday need to do if they are to keep Danny Rohl this summer.

Danny Rohl only joined Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, but has already become one of the club’s best managers in recent years.

Since the Owls were resigned to relegation after only a couple of months, the German has since completely transformed the team and has now guided them to within a point of safety – claiming eleven wins in 27 matches.

Rohl looks increasingly likely to help the Yorkshire outfit avoid relegation and could potentially drag the club out of the relegation zone with a win over Swansea City at Hillsborough this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday fans and players have all shown their support for the 34-year-old and will be in awe of him if he can keep them up, however they now face losing him less than a year after he joined.

Rohl’s impact since moving to the Championship hasn’t gone unnoticed and it is expected that he will have gained a lot of interest by the summer, while Sunderland are one club who are said to be considering a move for the coach.

Sheffield Wednesday will be confident they can keep hold of him if they stay in the second tier, while Carlton Palmer has now explained what they need to do to ensure he doesn’t leave.

Danny Rohl could ‘move onto pastures new’

Speaking toFootball League World, Palmer said: “I’ve said this several times, Danny Röhl has done a fantastic job after coming into Wednesday. I think he will keep them up. He has galvanised the club, he’s got the players playing for him, and I really do feel that he will keep them up. I thought that they were dead and buried, and the job that he has done has been brilliant.

“Röhl has already spoken about the things that need to be put in place to move the club forward, whether it be the training ground, the dressing room, Hillsborough. If these things are put in place, and then he’s not given the tools to strengthen the side in the way that he would like, then I think he and his backroom staff will be well coveted and well sought after.

“He will need to be backed by the owner if they want to keep him, and I’ve already heard one or two rumblings about that. So it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Röhl were to keep Wednesday up, and then move on to pastures new.”

Will Dejphon Chansiri give Rohl what he wants?

Dejphon Chansiri’s financial problems have already been made very clear, with the owner having asked supporters to donate money to pay off his HMRC debts earlier in the season.

The Owls haven’t spent seven figures on a player since 2017, and have recently had to get by with not splashing the cash on any area of the club.

Chansiri will know how important keeping hold of Rohl is to the club’s chances of success, but whether that means he will be willing to open up his wallet is a whole other question.

Rohl has a great relationship with his team and the fans, but the German takes great pride in his work on the training ground, and if the facilities aren’t up to his expectations then he may be tempted to go elsewhere.

It will be incredibly frustrating for Wednesday, who could well find themselves in the top half of the Championship table if they can keep hold of him – but it looks to be all down to Chansiri and his stubbornness.
