‘I hope Sir Jim knows’… Manchester United fans have a lot to say about Ivan Toney performance for Brentford

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at Brentford after a tough 99 minutes in which the Red Devils were second best.

Last week Ivan Toney and Kobbie Mainoo were teammates for England. On Saturday they shared the pitch as Manchester United took on Brentford.

Ivan Toney have an eventful game, hitting the woodwork in the first half, and keeping the United backline busy throughout in the 1-1 draw.

In the 99th minute his persistence paid off, when his clever footwork and subsequent cross was turned in by Kristoffer Ajer for an equaliser, from Toney’s assist.

Ivan Toney to Manchester United is in play

Manchester United are looking to sign a striker this summer, with Anthony Martial set to leave when his contract expires.

Ivan Toney is a player Manchester United have made checks on, per HITC, while The Athletic’s David Ornstein commented in a Q&A last week: “Perhaps there is scope to go for a Toney. If they decide to, it may of course come down to whether they are prepared to pay what Brentford want.”

The Mirror reported in early February that Ivan Toney is one of United’s top options for a summer move.

His performance against Manchester United came after his first goal for England in midweek, and demonstrated what a handful he can be.

  • 6 Shots
  • 1 Chances Created
  • 7 Duels Won
  • 49 Touches
  • 2 Fouls won

Toney has four goals in 11 club games this season for Brentford, following 20 goals in 33 games last season.

He is anintriguing option to provide an alternative to Rasmus Hojlund, and take some of the pressure off the Dane.

United must decide whether to pursue the 27-year-old, or target another younger striker like Benjamin Sesko, 20.

Manchester United fans impressed by Ivan Toney

Manchester United supporters had a lot to say about Ivan Toney’s performance, believing he can be a real asset if Ineos pay up this summer, hoping that Sir Jim Ratcliffe was watching.

One fan wrote on X: “Forget the result. We should SIGN IVAN TONEY this summer. What a player. His link up with Hojlund can take us to places!! Get him @INEOS.”

Another added: “If Dave Brailsford was at Brentford, he should conclude Toney deal right there. #MUFC.”

A third commented: “If Toney is available in the summer go get him. Sometimes I feel we still need an option of going with two up top. Two proper strikers.”

More comments included: “Ivan Toney in the summer is one we should definitely be looking at,” and “We need Toney in that United shirt.”

Another fan observed: “Ivan Toney’s price is going up these days. I hope Sir Jim knows this. I know a Man United player when I see one. Toney and Hojlund competing for a place is a good thing.”

With one more commenting: “@ManUtd should be in the race to sign Ivan Toney the guy is a really top striker.”

Toney is keen to leave Brentford for a new challenge, he’s made no secret of that. He will be annoyed not to have scored against United and not been clinical, but he still had a decisive impact on the match with his assist, and he certainly left an impression.
