Paul Merson makes it clear that one man was to blame for West Ham's 4-3 defeat to Newcastle

West Ham United lost to Newcastle on Saturday, and Paul Merson certainly hasn’t left it open to interpretation as to whose fault the capitulation was.

Paul Merson has delivered his take on Newcastle coming back from 3-1 down against West Ham in the Premier League to win the game 4-3 in the end.

Incredibly, Vladimir Coufal admitted after the match that the Magpies wanted it more than the Hammers and quite simply worked harder than us during the latter stages of the game.

That really is unacceptable. However, I believe there were many different factors that played a role in our defeat to the Toon.

The officials were terrible, both the referee and those in charge of VAR operations. David Moyes made some poor in-game decisions whilst the players themselves were so poor inside the final 20 minutes of the match.

If you had to pick one reason why we lost against Newcastle though, what would you go for? Paul Merson has offered his take on our 4-3 defeat…

Merson shares who was to blame for West Ham defeat to Newcastle

I’m still recovering from the final 15 minute collapse up at St James’ Park three days ago. It was such a bitter pill to swallow.

It really shouldn’t have ended up that way, and now we’re considered to be outsiders in the race for seventh place.

Merson shared who he thinks was to blame for our 4-3 loss against the Toon, when writing his column for Sportskeeda:

“West Ham were 3-1 up against Newcastle, and they took off Michail Antonio. He was their focal point, and they asked Newcastle to have a go. The substitution gave Newcastle the license to bomb forward, because they weren’t going to get hurt on the counter.”

I 100% agree with Merson here. When the score was 3-1 to us, we looked so dangerous, and were opening the hosts up time and time again.

However, when Moyes brought on Kalvin Phillips to replace Michail Antonio, he immediately handed the initiative to the Toon.

West Ham never should have lost to Newcastle on Saturday, and Paul Merson highlighted how Moyes contributed to the defeat.

Hopefully the Scot learns from that massive mistake.
