Journalist now gives one-word answer when asked if there’s any chance of Lawrence Stroll selling Aston Martin

The idea of Aston Martin executive chairman Lawrence Stroll may seem counter-productive given his aims in Formula 1.

However, the value of every team on the grid has increased greatly over the past few years as the sport continues to grow and with more races than ever on the F1 calendar.

Speaking on the Missed Apex Podcast, journalist Joe Saward has addressed whether there’s any chance the British-based team could be changing hands.

Lawrence Stroll decision on selling Aston Martin reportedly made

Things are going pretty well for Aston Martin this season, but they could be better.

The F1 grid in 2024 is split in half this season and Mike Krack’s team find themselves in the group fighting for points every weekend.

That’s the minimum that drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will expect this season after kicking on last year.

Alonso’s switch from Alpine in the winter of 2022 couldn’t have gone better with the Spaniard securing eight podiums last year.

However, they haven’t taken the same steps forward as their closest rivals this year.

The question now remains over whether Aston Martin can go to the next level without Lawrence Stroll selling the team, although he’s already aiming to sign the best drivers available in the future.

There’s talk that principal sponsors Aramco are considering a move to buy the team.

It would give the team a huge cash injection although it wouldn’t be straightforward to spend that money given the current cost cap.

Entering Formula 1 becoming more and more enticing

Asked if there was any hint of Aston Martin selling, Saward simply replied: “Nope.

“No more than the normal rumours which is that Lance Stroll’s not good and his dad will eventually wake up to the fact that he’s not good enough.

“Having said that, they’re still going and the car company is still driving itself along, renegotiating its almost £1bn worth of debt, trying to shift nearly £1bn worth of debt and make your company much better financially is a very difficult thing to do.

“So, the car company I’m very wary of the racing team, well that’s down to Lawrence Stroll’s desire to be successful either for himself or for his son and that’s the interesting question.”

Aston Martin have work to do this season

Unsurprisingly, Lawrence Stroll isn’t keen on selling Aston Martin as the team has plenty of potential to go up a level right now.

Tying down Fernando Alonso to a new contract has to be the priority right now and Saward has provided an update on his future as well.

If Lawrence Stroll did sell, that would put his son Lance’s position under pressure.

He’s been unable to keep up with his more successful teammate since they were paired together.

Eddie Jordan has even suggested he could lose his seat to another driver on the grid next year.

If Aston Martin were suddenly available to buy, Aramco would be considered the front-runner to take control of the team.

However, Andretti are still waiting in the wings for their opportunity to join the grid.

They’ve been linked with purchasing Alpine in the past but won’t be fussy about how they enter the sport once they get their chance.
