If reports are true, Erik ten Hag's latest comments may not have done Mason Mount any favours - opinion

Tonight sees the first opportunity for Mason Mount to face Chelsea since he left the club last summer.

Many will have never expected that the England international would have ever left the club, after it was hinted that he was in line to become the poster boy of the club for many years to come.

A report came out yesterday that stated that Mount was actually still very hurt by the fact that his exit from Stamford Bridge played out the way it did.

Mount upset at Chelsea exit

It was claimed that the player himself was actually upset that people believe he left for financial reasons, rather than him being seen as the perfect opportunity to generate some much needed cash.

However, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has just said something that has cast doubt over his reported thoughts.

The Dutchman said: “I don’t think Chelsea wanted to sell him!. They wanted to keep him and offered him a new contract many times. But he wanted to make this step and join Man United.”

Ten Hag puts Mount in trouble with Chelsea fans

If this is true, there will be a lot less sympathy coming the way of Mount from Chelsea fans who were actually keen to keep hold of him before this season got underway.

The new wage structure at the club has seen the majority of player earn moderate salaries, with the opportunity being there for them to earn higher wages.

This opportunity looks to have cropped up for Cole Palmer, with his brilliant performances in his first campaign here.

It remains to be seen the reception Mount gets when he makes his first appearance back at Stamford Bridge tonight, although it is believed he would not celebrate if he did find the net against his former side.
