Leicester City dodged a bullet with 'gifted' £60,000-a-week target Maresca was desperate to sign - opinion

Leicester City dodged a bullet by not singing this player in Janaury.

The East Midlanders were unable to bring in any signings in the winter transfer window due to concerns over Profit and Sustainability rules.

Having already breached PSR during the 2022/23 season, the club are thought to be in line for a second breach this year.

If City are to avoid a second charge, they’ll likely need to move on key assets in the summer with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall the first to leave, perhaps.

Enzo Maresca was desperate to add to his squad mid-season but the club weren’t able to bring any players in without moving some out the door.

They were close to bringing one in, though, it seems, in hindsight, that they’ve avoided what could have been a transfer blunder.

It was all but wrapped up, Stefano Sensi was set to be unveiled as a Leicester player during the winter transfer window, joining from Serie A giants Inter.

He even completed his medical at Seagrave but the deal collapsed right at the death, as the two clubs couldn’t agree on payment terms, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Now, a couple of months down the line, it looks as though Leicester have got away with one, as the ‘gifted’ Italian midfielder has hardly kicked a ball due to ankle surgery.

Many were well aware of Sensi’s recurring injury problems but it was a risk the club and Maresca were willing to take.

Ultimately, despite the initial disappointment of the transfer not going through, it has turned out to be a lucky escape.

Leicester City should avoid going back in for Stefano Sensi

It was reported after the deal failed to materialise, that Leicester would resume their interest Sensi at the end of the summer when his contract at Inter expired.

Though, the East Midlanders should certainly consider staying well clear of the injury-prone 28-year-old, who has played just 65 minutes of football this season.

The Foxes will likely be tight on finances this term, too, so they’ll need to be especially shrewd in the market.

They can’t afford to bring in a player who might pick up injuries throughout the season and he’ll also be joining on pretty hefty wages, with £60,000-per-week his reported earnings.

A younger option, perhaps on loan, would be a better plan of action this summer, as Leicester navigate their way around the looming PSR saga.
