‘My gut feeling’: Danny Murphy says ‘passionate’ Man City man is in danger of going too far

Danny Murphy has suggested that one Manchester City figure sometimes goes over the top with his behaviour.

Even though the Citizens are in the middle of a crucial period of their season, there have been some discussions in the media about one particular club figure and some of the things he has done recently.

In fact, one pundit and former Premier League player has weighed in on the matter, sharing his thoughts on the figure in question and the talk around him at the moment.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy had this to say on the topic of Pep Guardiola and the way he spoke to Jack Grealish on the pitch after the full-time whistle in City’s 0-0 draw against Arsenal.

He said: “I think one of the problems with this, he always looks like he’s angry and telling people off even when it might be reasonably constructive.

“What people tend not to want to see is the players’ reactions when he does it. A lot of the times the players’ reactions aren’t participating defensive or argumentative. My gut feeling is that most things can be dealt with in the dressing room.

“Pep is a very openly passionate manager. He’s one of those on the periphery of being over the top at times and there’s a lot of people who like that in a manager. I think some of the times he’s going on and this passion he has and this energy takes over him a little bit and whether it be positive or negative comes out in an aggressive way.

“I think in this day and age we just have that much coverage of every game and every incident that we try and find things to pin on people who are just so wonderful. It’s only been emphasised because they drew 0-0.

“They drew 0-0 at game, Jack has had a bit of a tough time so it’s been exaggerated and emphasised, if he’d have done it after a 2-0 win to Bernardo Silva we wouldn’t be talking about it.”

While Murphy is open to his opinion that Guardiola’s chats with the players could wait until they’re in the dressing room, it’s nice to see that the pundit has gone in depth about the ins and outs of the situation.

In response to questions put to him about his emphatic conversation with Grealish on the pitch after the Arsenal game, Guardiola sarcastically said it was down to his ego and that he just does it for the cameras rather than to help his players.

This says to us that the City boss doesn’t see any sort of problem for the way he communicates with his players or why he is being questioned for it.

In our view, we feel that the 53-year-old should be allowed to coach and speak with his players about anything if he thinks it will help them, regardless of when or where it is.
