Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with some incredible midfield players over the years.
From Mousa Dembele to Luka Modric, Spurs have never been short of midfield talent over the years, and often, these players don’t get the credit they necessarily deserve.
Speaking on the Off The Shelf Podcast, Michael Dawson has been discussing his unsung hero at Tottenham, and he mentioned a midfielder that he played with in the mid-2000s.
Michael Dawson’s Spurs unsung hero
Dawson played with so many talented and underrated players, but he named Michael Carrick as the player he thought never got the appreciation he deserved at Spurs.
“Who is your Spurs unsung hero?” Dawson was asked.
“It’s going to be another midfielder, this guy, not just at this football club, Alex Ferguson didn’t pick him for a while and then he realised how good he was. Michael Carrick, what a player, he never got the recognition he deserved for England, this boy was special, a great guy as well who I looked up to. Michael Carrick for sure, what a player,” Dawson said.
Michael Carrick’s teammates loved him
It’s very interesting to hear Dawson saying this, because he’s not the first player to speak about Carrick in this way.
Just a few weeks ago, Dawson’s long-time centre-back partner, Ledley King, spoke about the midfielder in a similar way.
“It’s like Carrick right? People don’t realise how good he was, he was balanced. I love balanced players, I love that type of player. I spent 18 months with him and he was a top top player as well,” King said.
Carrick may not have been highly-rated by the media during his playing career, but make no mistake about it, his fellow pros really appreciated him as a player, and so did his managers.
Carrick probably was a bit of an unsung hero at Tottenham, but he did still end up getting a £15m move to Manchester United off the back of his Spurs performances.
