Heron Foods staff in Newark host weekend event to help terminally ill cancer customer and Reach Learning Disability Newark

Customers at a food store will be greeted by staff wearing pyjamas and can even throw wet sponges at them for charity.

Staff at Heron Foods, Newark, will be wearing their pyjamas to raise funds for a terminally ill customer with cancer and Reach Learning Disability Newark.

Kay Coombs, a senior sales assistant at the store — also known as the staff’s mama — is organising the two-day fundraising event.

The event will take place at the store this Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6.

Staff at the store had been suggesting wearing pyjamas to work, which led Kay to think it was a great way to raise money whilst having fun.

Kay said: “We have no target or any expectations for the day other than having fun and raising money.

“I suppose we just want to raise as much money as humanely possible.”

The staff will be wearing their ready-to-sleep clothes to work both days but on Friday, from 10am until 4pm, they will also be packing all customer’s bags, and in return, they can donate to the cause.

If weather permits, there will be a game outside the store, of throwing a wet sponge at staff members on both days.

“People get to pay for the privilege of throwing the wet sponge at us,” added Kay.

On Saturday from 2pm until 4pm, there will be a raffle, tombola and cake stalls at the store.

Some of the raffle prizes include chocolate hampers, food vouchers and gift sets.

“I am excited, I think it will be good fun and for such a good cause as well,” said the organiser.
