Emerging transfer interest in £4m Middlesbrough star is great news for forgotten man - opinion

Recently emerging transfer interest in one Middlesbrough star could be great news for one of his forgotten teammates.

There’s a growing list of Middlesbrough players wanted by Premier League clubs ahead of this summer.

Hayden Hackney has been linked with the likes of Nottingham Forest and West Ham as his breakthrough continues.

Then, summer signing Rav van den Berg has interest from multiple Premier League clubs, per reports, including the likes of Everton.

And now another name has been added to the list of wanted players at the Riverside.

On Thursday, it was revealed that Seny Dieng has interest from the likes of Newcastle United.

Also interested in the Senegalese international are Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace, and Sevilla.

Dieng joined Middlesbrough from QPR last summer with Boro spending a reported £2million on the 29-year-old; it’s said that Middlesbrough want at least double that for Dieng.

So far this season, Dieng has featured 29 times in the Championship, conceding 38 goals and keeping nine clean sheets.

He’s missed parts of the season; due to AFCON and then with Tom Glover taking the starting spot for a brief while.

Why Seny Dieng interest is good news for one Middlesbrough man

Dieng has been a good overall signing for Middlesbrough.

Although he’s not blown away the competition in terms of clean sheets and so on, he is Michael Carrick‘s best goalkeeper right now.

Glover remains no.2 and he’s proved to be a divisive player at times, then third-choice Jamie Jones is out of contract in the summer.

So Middlesbrough might need a goalkeeper this summer, whatever happens with Dieng.

But with Dieng potentially leaving, especially so if a team comes in with a big offer, then it could see Sol Brynn brought back into the fold.

Middlesbrough academy man Brynn, 23, has spent this season out on loan at Leyton Orient in League One.

After a strong season with Sindon Town before, Brynn has since shown his class with the O’s, featuring 38 times in the league so far this season, with 40 goals conceded and 13 clean sheets.

As per Sofascore, Dieng has a 6.93 average rating this season, compared to Brynn’s 7.01.

Brynn also outscores Dieng in average saves-per-game, coming in at 2.6 to Dieng’s 2.3.

Having shone in League One, Brynn now looks ready to make the step up to the Championship, and the timing could be perfect for him to do so with Middlesbrough next summer.

Carrick and co would also, surely, be keen to see another academy man make an impact in the first-team, with Brynn potentially saving the club millions.

Whilst another goalkeeper will be needed this summer, Brynn should certainly be in the thinking for the no.1 spot, especially if Dieng leaves.

If Dieng stays then it would be understandable if Brynn considers his options.
