Latest Sheffield Wednesday update means we've surely seen the last of well-liked star - opinion

An emerging update at Sheffield Wednesday means we’ve surely seen the last of this well-liked player.

Sheffield Wednesday head to QPR in the Championship on Saturday, and it’s a game that could see a lot of players make their full returns to action.

Ian Poveda will be hoping to return to the XI and inspire the Owls to a much-needed win.

Elsewhere, Josh Windass is back in contention and so too is Callum Paterson, whilst Di’Shon Bernard is a doubt for QPR.

Sheffield Wednesday are winless in four after losing 2-0 at Middlesbrough on Easter Monday.

The gap to safety stands at two points and so a win against QPR could lift the Owls out of the bottom three; David Prutton has predicted a 2-1 QPR win vs Sheffield Wednesday.

One player who we’ve barely seen this season is Lee Gregory.

He’s featured 13 times in the Championship this season, with one goal, after scoring 11 in 41 League One appearances last season.

Danny Rohl has never favoured Gregory over others in attack, with the 35-year-old having not featured in a single matchday squad in 2024.

It came after a failed deadline day move to Derby County during the winter transfer window.

But Gregory was handed a glimmer of hope last month when he was added to Sheffield Wednesday’s 25-man squad list for the final run-in.

An emerging report from The Star though says that Gregory has now sustained a hamstring injury, ruling him out of a possible return vs QPR.

The same report says that Sheffield Wednesday hope Gregory isn’t sidelined for too long, though a timeline is not given.

Despite barely featuring this season, Gregory remains a well-liked name among fans.

Last season he gave the club a lot of good memories, and despite his age, he still showed signs of a top Football League striker.

And he may well have had a part to play this season.

Sheffield Wednesday arguably didn’t need to sign Ashley Fletcher on loan from Watford; Gregory could’ve done a better job and they’d have had a loan space still open too.

But after Gregory’s failed move to Derby, his lack of game time this season, and the fact that he’s out of contract in the summer, he’s nailed on to leave.

Even if the Owls are relegated, few would blame Gregory for wanting to move on and go to a club where he’s wanted.

And unfortunately for him and the fans, this latest injury update could mean that we’ve seen the last of Gregory in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt.

There’s only six games of the season left now and Rohl is unlikely to bring Gregory out of the dark as fixtures become more and more crucial, especially so after an injury.

Still, the striker could join a club lower down the Football League pyramid this summer and remind everyone of his quality.
