1 shot, 1 injured near Rutgers U. campus

Two people affiliated with Rutgers University were hospitalized Friday following an early morning shooting near the campus in New Brunswick, authorities said.

Police responded shortly after 2 a.m. to a report of several gunshots fired in the area of Easton Avenue and Hamilton Street, according to university police.

“As a result, a victim, who is affiliated with Rutgers University, was struck by a stray bullet within her private residence,” police said in a statement.

Police did not say if the victim was a Rutgers student.

The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, located a few blocks away, police said.

A second victim, who is also affiliated with Rutgers University, arrived at the hospital “with injuries related to the shooting,” the statement said. It was not clear whether the second victim had also been shot.

The conditions of the victims was not immediately available Friday morning. No arrests has been made and university police said a description of a shooter or shooters was “limited at this time.”

A spokeswoman for Rutgers said the university has been in touch with the victims and their families, “offering support and assistance during this time.”

“The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority,” the university said in a statement. “The Rutgers University Police Department, in collaboration with the New Brunswick Police, will be increasing police presence in the area of the incident.”
