Arsenal icon Mesut Ozil reveals the surprise club he would have loved to play for

Former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil was one of the greatest attacking midfielders of his generation, and enjoyed a glittering career.

The German World Cup winner joined Arsenal as a club record signing from Real Madrid in 2013, arriving in dramatic fashion on deadline day as one of the highest-profile transfers in the history of the club.

By that time, he had already played for Schalke and Werder Bremen before becoming a Galactico at Real Madrid, establishing himself as one of the best players in the world in a team alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria.

Although the circumstances of his departure in 2021 were far from ideal, Ozil won four FA Cups during his seven-and-a-half-year spell at Arsenal, and was one of the most skilful players of the Emirates era.

He moved on to his boyhood club Fenerbahce, then had a final stint at Istanbul Basaksehir before retiring from the game in 2023.

Having played for some massive clubs in his career, Ozil has now revealed which club he would have loved to play for, but did not manage to.

The 35-year-old uploaded a post to X, which already gained attention because of his incredible body transformation since retiring, wearing a Juventus shirt with his name on the back, with the surprise admission that he is a huge fan of the Italian giants.

“Proud of my career and all the amazing clubs I’ve had the privilege to play for – only one club that was missing: My Italian love, Juventus FC,” he posted.

Around the time of his Arsenal departure in 2021, the playmaker was reportedly offered to Juventus, who declined to make a move for him as they were focused on younger talents.

This move could have seen him line up alongside Ronaldo again, as well as former Real Madrid and Germany teammate Sami Khedira, and Arsenal legend Aaron Ramsey, who recently praised Ozil.

He joined Fenerbahce after a fallout with Mikel Arteta saw him exiled from the Arsenal squad, and whilst his move to his boyhood club turned sour in the end, his signing at the time was a high-profile one for the Turkish giants.
