'On the line': Ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker gives 12-word verdict on Josh Windass howler v QPR

Sheffield Wednesday beat QPR 2-0 in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Sheffield Wednesday were on the road once again on Saturday afternoon, heading to West London to face QPR in the Championship.

Both sides have been relatively well-matched throughout the season, though QPR have pulled ahead in recent weeks.

The R’s were six points above the drop zone before kick off whilst Sheffield Wednesday were three.

Though at half-time, Danny Rohl‘s side had arguably been the better team.

They grew into the game and had a golden opportunity to take the lead, though Josh Windass couldn’t convert from close range.

And Wednesday started well after the break and eventually found a way through.

Djeidi Gassama forced his way into the box and saw a clearance ricochet of his leg and into the back of the QPR net, with Anthony Musaba adding a second late on.

One of the bright sparks in the first half was Ian Poveda.

The Leeds United loan man looked up for the challenge on his return to the XI and was causing QPR problems early on.

Before he was forced off with an unfortunate hamstring injury, Poveda put the ball on a plate for Windass inside the six-yard box.

In fact, Windass was almost on the goal line when the ball hit him in the side and went wide.

Windass looked as though he was falling, but it was still a huge miss and one that might come back to haunt the striker, who returned to action vs QPR.

Commenting on the miss, former Sheffield Wednesday striker John Pearson gave this 12-word reaction on BBC Radio Sheffield:

“That is going to haunt Josh Windass. It was on the line.”

Windass will certainly think he should’ve scored in the first half vs QPR.

Although the ball came at him fast and he looked off balance, to miss from such close and from being so central is frustrating.

But there’s still time for Windass to repeat his dramatic heroics from last season.

And with five games left to play there’s still time for Sheffield Wednesday to salvage their season, with Windass’ return a huge boost for the run-in.

After what is a huge win for the Owls, Sheffield Wednesday sit in 22nd place of the Championship table and behind Birmingham City in 21st only on goal difference.

Latest on Josh Windass Sheffield Wednesday future

Windass is one the many out of contract in the summer.

Rohl previously stated that he’d like to keep Windass at the club beyond this season, though Barry Bannan‘s recent comments on contracts suggest that talks over new deals aren’t in the pipelines.

Bannan revealed that he’s yet to discuss his future with the club, also criticising the fact that so many players are out of contract at Hillsborough this summer.

Up next for the Owls is a home game vs Norwich City on Tuesday night.
