Paqueta sulked Moyes into submission and it saved West Ham

Hammers star Lucas Paqueta sulked David Moyes into submission as West Ham came from behind to secure a vital Premier League win.

West Ham came from a goal down for the third time in a week but this time went on to win as they beat Wolves 2-1.

The victory means West Ham have now amassed 19 points from losing positions this season, the fourth most in the top flight.

That says a lot about this Hammers side.

But it also tells you everything about how West Ham have approached games all too often this term.

Despite facing a Wolves side ravaged by injury, West Ham set up ultra defensively, recording just four per cent possession in the opening 10 minutes and only 20 per cent by the 20th.

David Moyes did not make a single substitution in the 1-1 draw with Spurs in midweek.

West Ham come from behind to beat Wolves

But had the manager made all five at half-time against Wolves, nobody could have complained.

Chief among those putting in abysmal performances was Lucas Paqueta.

The Brazilian magnifico revealed he played against Spurs after suffering with illness.

The truth behind his lacklustre first half at Molineux was clearly the fact Moyes had put him back on the left after freeing him up for a central role since Michail Antonio came back into the side up top.

Antonio was rested and Paqueta looked crestfallen to be back out wide, having to do more defending than attacking for the entire first half.

It is perhaps a stretch to say Paqueta was throwing his toys out of the pram as he walked around at times with West Ham going in 1-0 down at the break.

Paqueta sulked Moyes match-winning change

Moyes changed things up second half to get Paqueta further up the pitch and more central.

And it paid off. West Ham started dominating the play, enjoying more possession, attempts and shots on target.

The Brazilian magnifico was at the heart of everything West Ham did going forward in the second half. He probed the Wolves defence and provided the quality needed to break the lines.

If we are to criticise Moyes for his first half setup and approach then he deserves credit for making the changes.

Even if he was left with little choice by his unhappy £51m man.

Quite why Moyes decided to rest Antonio after West Ham had looked so good going forward since his return is anyone’s guess.

Mitigating circumstances to Moyes tactics

Antonio does need to be managed given his injury history and the Hammers face a huge Europa League quarter-final at Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday.

So there are mitigating circumstances.

But his decision to start Antonio on the bench was almost as costly as the one to bring him off at Newcastle last weekend.

Except this time the Hammers had enough time to right the wrong as Antonio provided the focal point to give Paqueta the platform to do his stuff.

West Ham rode their luck but got the win thanks to Paqueta’s penalty and James Ward-Prowse’s goal direct from a corner.

It means West Ham can go above Man United into sixth on Sunday if Liverpool beat them by three goals.
