'Manchester United seem to up their game': Chris Sutton predicts who'll win between Red Devils and Liverpool

Manchester United and Liverpool will lock horns at Old Trafford on Sunday in one of the biggest fixtures in the English calendar.

The Red Devils and the Reds (and their fans) boast a fierce rivalry, so there will likely be fireworks when both teams take to the pitch.

Victory for Manchester United over Liverpool would be a welcome boost for a team that is enduring a seriously sub-par season.

Erik ten Hag’s charges are currently sixth in the Premier League table, nine points behind Tottenham Hotspur, and have lost 12 times in the top flight this term.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are currently involved in one of the most exciting Premier League title races in recent years, alongside Manchester City and Arsenal.

Any slip-ups for any of the three challengers at this stage of the season could prove incredibly costly, so Liverpool need to be at the top of their game.

Chris Sutton, who previews and predicts every Premier League fixture of the season, has now given his prediction on Man United v Liverpool.

Who does Chris Sutton think will win between Manchester United and Liverpool?

The BBC Sport pundit has acknowledged that the Red Devils seem to up their game against the Reds, but he doesn’t feel it’ll be enough this time. He has gone for a 3-1 away win.

“You really cannot deny that Manchester United seem to up their game when they face Liverpool,” Sutton wrote on BBC Sport.

“Which would make me really angry if I were a United fan. How about playing like that in a few other games?

“I was at Stamford Bridge for Manchester United’s last-gasp defeat by Chelsea on Thursday and heard their manager Erik ten Hag talk afterwards about how his side are making progress.

“I just don’t see it that way. Alejandro Garnacho really impressed me at Stamford Bridge but I worry about United defensively. With what is at stake for Liverpool now, I don’t see United keeping them out.

“It won’t be a runaway victory but my feeling is it is going to be third time lucky for Jurgen Klopp’s side against United this season, after a draw and a defeat in their first two meetings.”

This will be a real test for a Liverpool side desperate to keep winning in pursuit of their 20th English title.

However, the Red Devils and their fans will not make it easy for them, particularly considering the Anfield side will equal the hosts’ record of 20 titles if they win.

Despite this, I feel Liverpool will have enough to get past a Man United side currently low on inspiration and confidence. I reckon Man United 1-2 Liverpool.
