'Did brilliantly...': 9/10 Sheffield Wednesday ace was the standout v QPR, he dominated one stat

Sheffield Wednesday had one standout player in the 2-0 win vs QPR.

Sheffield Wednesday and their Championship survival bid has been given a timely boost, after the Owls won 2-0 against QPR on Saturday.

It comes after a pretty turbulent week following the 2-0 defeat vs Middlesbrough.

Danny Rohl didn’t hide his anger at the performance and the players, with comments from Barry Bannan about the contract situation of many players then causing a stir online.

But Rohl, Bannan, and everyone else put a fairly controversial week to bed with a confident 2-0 win at Loftus Road.

Sheffield Wednesday started well against the R’s.

Although QPR looked quite bright early on, the Owls kept themselves in it, with Ian Poveda impressing.

Poveda almost provided the first goal of the game too, putting the ball on a plate for Josh Windass who missed an open goal.

Poveda was then forced off through injury, being replaced by Djeidi Gassama who arguably gave Sheffield Wednesday the win.

He danced through QPR defenders and then saw a clearance come off his shin and go into the back of the net for the first goal, then turning provider for Anthony Musaba late on.

When Poveda went off, fans’ heads dropped.

He looked sharp on his return to the side, but thankfully, Sheffield Wednesday players didn’t let their heads go down.

They retained their dominance on the game and Gassama really stepped up to the plate.

The Frenchman was a livewire throughout, going on to earn a 9/10 rating from The Star, with journalist Joe Crann adding:

“Came on for Poveda when he was injured, and looked bright straight away. Could’ve scored in the first half after breaking through on goal, but made up for it in the second. Did brilliantly to beat two men in the box before his opener, even if the finish itself was a bit fortuitous. Put it on a plate for Musaba for the second goal, too.”

As per Sofascore, Gassama made 11 out of 15 passes vs QPR (73% success), winning 9 out of 12 duels (most of anyone on the pitch), with 4 out of 3 dribbles completed (more than any Wednesday player).

Ian Poveda injury blow

Poveda will be devastated if he’s now out for the season.

He looked glum as he went off and Rohl will also be gutted if Poveda is unable to feature in the run-in.

But Gassama’s performance today will give Rohl hope that Sheffield Wednesday can continue on without Poveda.

He showed against QPR that he too can provide the spark and the energy, and most importantly, the end product.

Like Crann writes, he was fortunate for the opening goal, but he made his own luck with a mazy run into the box.

He then showed his creative quality to set up Musaba for the second goal and then the win.

Up next for Sheffield Wednesday is a home game vs Norwich City on Tuesday.
