'Referees have to be better...": Final Score give damning verdict on Wolves' VAR controversy

Final Score has issued a damning verdict on the officials after Wolves were once again on the end of a baffling VAR decision.

Saturday afternoon was once again all about VAR with Wolves yet again at the centre of the controversy.

In a big game that could well decide who qualifies for Europe at the end of the season, Gary O’Neil’s side hosted West Ham at Molineux.

A victory would have seen Wolves overtake the Hammers and looked good for this at half-time at 1-0.

However, David Moyes’ team clawed the match back to 2-1 in their favour and it looked as if Wolves would go four games without a win.

That was until captain Max Kilman rose highest off a corner in the 99th minute to make it 2-2 on the day. However, celebrations were soon ended as VAR advised the referee to disallow the goal for offside.

Youngster Twanda Chirewa was adjudged to have obstructed Lukasz Fabianski’s vision in an offside position.

This decision was widely controversial, with few agreeing with the referee’s decision. O’Neil slammed the officials after the game with even Moyes believing that the goal should have stood.

In the aftermath of Saturday’s fixtures, BBC’s Final Score also weighed in on the decision giving a damning verdict on the Premier League’s officials.

Premier League officials ‘have to do better’

On Final Score, the panel discussed the disallowed goal after the game. Presenter Jason Mohammad and pundit Michael Brown both weighed in on their views.

Jason Mohammad firstly said: “No matter which league you are in, whether you are in the Premier League or non-league, or whatever league you are in, the referees and the officials have got to do better. They’ve got to be better, fact.”

Brown went on to say: “It started at Manchester United didn’t it? When he first got into the role. Do you know what, it is a crazy decision. All of the staff were off the bench, they are going crazy, all getting into trouble.

“But he’ll have to have a look, he’ll have to reflect and let’s make that phone, let’s have that explanation from the man at the top of the officials because then you can understand a little bit more, you build a relationship with going forward and I still think that is important.”

VAR continues to cost Wolves

The decisions that continue to go against Wolves this campaign are nothing short of horrendous.

How a team of officials can literally watch the game on TV, have multiple replays with multiple angles and still consistently get the wrong decision is incompetence of the highest order.

If the officials could actually do their jobs, Wolves would be in the European spots right now with arguably 10 points already lost this season from poor refereeing.

Since the turn of 2023, decisions from VAR have only got worse with Howard Webb showing little improvements to the system.

The saying that ‘these decisions even out at the end of the season’ seems fruitless when Wolves consistently have poor VAR decisions that go against them.

Since its inception, many of the Molineux faithful will struggle to think of a controversial VAR decision that has actually gone in their favour.

It’s time to finally get rid. No fan actually wants it, no improvements have been made and half of the time, the officials had it right on the pitch to begin with.
