'The only thing': Ian Wright believes Erling Haaland should work on one aspect of his game for Man City

Manchester City star Erling Haaland is arguably the best striker in the world – but Ian Wright believes there is one part of his game in particular that he may wish to work on.

Haaland was back amongst the goals yesterday, as he scored in City’s 4-2 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Norwegian was on target in the second-half, scoring after great work by Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne – who scored two goals in the game.

It was his 30th of the season across all competitions, and his first for a month in the Premier League.

Haaland probably hasn’t been quite at the same level as he was last term for City, but 30 goals is obviously still a highly impressive tally at this stage of the season.

Realistically, there aren’t many things Haaland needs to work on. But pundit Ian Wright did offer up one suggestion on Match of the Day last night…

Haaland is one of the most lethal players in football.

Since he brome through at Molde and then went to RB Salzburg, the Norwegian sensation has been a goal machine, and he is widely regarded as one of the best finishers on the planet.

But in the eyes of Wright, Haaland could perhaps do with working on his finishing with his weak foot.

Analysing a good chance he had in the first-half against Palace, Wright said on Match of the Day: “One thing I probably would work on, in his position, is his right foot.

“I think when you look at it here, it’s set up for him to go right and then just slot it. He’s so predominant with wanting to get back on his left. This is what gives the goalkeeper time. You can see it here, he’s going to try and get it on his left. He can’t open himself up properly, and the guy gets back and the goalie gets closer.

“That’s the only thing I would work on if I was him.”

Ian Wright is spot on

Realistically, this is probably the only thing that Haaland should be looking to improve.

City don’t need him to get better at technical things, because that is not what he is about. His left foot finishing is obviously very strong, and he is also very, very good in the air these days.

But he doesn’t actually score too many goals with his weak foot. As per Transfermarkt, he has scored 27 goals with his right foot so far in his career at club level, with 10 of those coming as a City player. Just two of his 30 goals this season have been with his right foot.

It’s not really an issue for Halaand considering how many goals he scores. It doesn’t really matter how they go in, so long as they do.

But sometimes, as was the case against Palace with the chance he had in the first-half, it could be most beneficial to him to use his right foot.
