‘An opportunity’: Mauricio Pochettino admits he wanted to try Chelsea man in new position vs Sheffield United

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has now admitted that he was keen to see one player in a new position in yesterday’s Premier League game against Sheffield United.

He told the club app that he was keen to see one of his star players feature in a slightly different role as his side looked to climb towards the European places at last.

Things certainly did not go to plan at Bramall Lane for the Blues, with them drawing 2-2 against their relegation-threatened opponents.

Chelsea concede late against Sheffield United

They conceded deep into stoppage time after it looked like Noni Madueke’s fierce strike was going to see them take all three points back to West London.

The goal was set up again by Cole Palmer, who reached a tally of 25 combined goals and assists in the Premier League for the season.

Despite the contribution again, it was not the 21-year-old’s best display by any means, especially taking into account his heroics from a few days ago against Manchester United.

Pochettino wanted to try Palmer in new position

Most of his good work has been on the right of attack, however Pochettino admitted he was keen to see his most influential player feature in a slightly different position.

He said: “Today was an opportunity to see Cole Palmer in a different position too.”

It looks as if he was not the only player who was featuring in a new role for Chelsea either.

Conor Gallagher, who has been equally as important for Pochettino this season, featured away from his normal central role, instead occupying the left-hand-side.

It is fair to say this decision slightly backfired for the boss, with the England international far from his best in a role his skillset does not suit well.

It remains to be seen if Mykhailo Mudryk is recalled for that position when the Blues are next back in action in a week’s time against Everton.
