'Very important': Wayne Rooney reacts after hearing Tottenham stat, now level with Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest was enough to take Ange Postecoglou’s side into fourth place in the Premier League on Sunday – but it also saw Spurs go joint first in one specific stat.

Despite Chris Wood’s equaliser, Spurs went on to win 3-1 – with Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro in amongst the goals during a much-improved second half. It saw Spurs climb into fourth, in the League.

It comes after Villa could only draw against Aston Villa, and Manchester United drew with Liverpool on Sunday. Spurs sit 10 points behind third-placed Man City, with seven league matches now left to play.

The good news does not stop there either, with Villa having played an extra game. Harry Redknapp said Spurs would finish fourth and they look good to do so now. A great first season for Postecoglou, if so.

Tottenham go joint first with defenders scoring league goals

With two defenders scoring on Sunday, in Porro and van de Ven, Spurs have now gone joint first in terms of defenders scoring goals – alongside North London rivals Arsenal, a total of 11 from the back four.

Wayne Rooney responded after being told the stat on Premier League Productions and said it was crucial that other parts of the squad started to chip in, after the loss of star Harry Kane to Bayern last summer.

“It was very important that after losing Harry Kane, who was the main threat for Tottenham, they had to spread the goals around the team. They’re doing that. Defenders, midfielders chipping in,” Rooney said.

Who else have contributed to Tottenham’s 11 League goals?

Not many would have predicted before the start of the season that Cristian Romero would be sitting on the same amount of goals as James Maddison – in April. That is not a slight on England man Maddison.

But simply, how excellent Spurs have been in sharing the goals around. Romero has four, while Destiny Udogie and van de Ven have two apiece. Ben Davies, Emerson Royal and Porro have all got one goal.

Spurs have scored the joint-fifth most goals in the League this season, alongside Newcastle on 65. But only Son Heung-min and Richarlison are in double digits, and the latter on 10. Shared evenly so far.
