'Incredible': Pundit amazed by what he saw Jarell Quansah do after his mistake for Liverpool vs Man United

Neil Mellor has suggested that Jarell Quansah did something incredible after making the mistake which allowed Bruno Fernandes to equalise for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men must be wondering how exactly they did not secure the three points which would have sent them back to the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool blew Manchester United away, particularly in the first-half at Old Trafford. But they were punished for only taking a 1-0 lead into the break.

Jarell Quansah underhit a pass to Virgil van Dijk just inside the Liverpool half. And that presented Bruno Fernandes with the opportunity lob Caoimhin Kelleher from 40 yards. Thankfully for the Reds, Kelleher did not get a touch on the ball as the Irishman was outside his penalty area.

It gave United a huge boost, and they would take the lead midway through the second-half thanks to a moment of brilliance from Kobbie Mainoo.

Jarell Quansah lauded after mistake in Liverpool draw

But speaking on the Premier League All Access podcast, Neil Mellor suggested that he was so impressed by how Quansah recovered from his error.

“12 months ago, he was playing in League One with Bristol Rovers. The start of pre-season, he was involved and he impressed. Questions were asked, would he maybe go out on loan again? He’s had a little bit of luck in terms of Joel Matip being out injured, so he’s had game-time. He was trusted to play against Manchester City, which was a big call, and then again today. And for me, young players are going to make mistakes. That was a mistake, an uncharacteristic mistake. He’s obviously trying to play the ball back to van Dijk, not seen Bruno Fernandes, intercepted, goal,” he said.

“The response, I thought the response was incredible. A daunting atmosphere, the fans were up, weren’t they. But he responded really well and he didn’t let that affect his performance. So we knew Liverpool would push further forward and he would be exposed to the counter attack. And I thought he handled that really well, so reaction was outstanding. Yes, it was an error and we see defenders, goalkeepers make mistakes all the time, the way that they like to play out from the back, but his reaction was superb.”

Reds have another gem in their ranks

Quansah looks so assured defensively, and there was a couple of moments late on where he burst forward with the ball at his feet. There are definitely times where you would be forgiven for wondering if that is actually Virgil van Dijk in possession, such is his calmness.

Trent Alexander-Arnold lauded Quansah after his debut earlier this season. And he has just kicked on in the months since.

That error may be looked back upon as a key moment should Liverpool agonisingly fall short in the title race.

However, Quansah’s emergence has been a key reason the Reds find themselves in this position in the first place.
