24-year-old Chelsea player may have blown his chance to be a regular next season after yesterday - opinion

Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United yesterday could prove costly in their bid to qualify for the Europa League.

The Blues were winning the game but allowed the Blades to snatch a point right at the death after failing to stop Oli McBurnie from equalising in stoppage time.

That draw leaves Chelsea five points behind Manchester United in sixth, which is not the biggest gap. But it obviously could have been much smaller had they got over the line yesterday.

That draw may also prove costly for one of their players, who is not guaranteed to be a starter next season.

Which Chelsea players could lose their starting sport next season?

There are quite a few. One is definitely Nicolas Jackson, though many would have arrived at that conclusion long before the Sheffield United draw.

Jackson has not done terribly this term, though former Chelsea defender Scott Minto does not think he should be starting every game for the Blues.

In 35 appearances, the Senegal international has scored 12 goals, which is not a horrendous record, especially for a 22-year-old.

However, Chelsea continue to be linked with other players in his position, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic also finds himself in a similar situation, which is why the Sheffield United draw could prove costly for him.

Djordje Petrovic should be worried after Sheffield United draw

Petrovic disappointed in Chelsea’s draw with Sheffield United yesterday.

For example, the 24-year-old really should have stopped Jayden Bogle’s goal, which came at his near post. He should never have been beaten there.

It has been claimed that Brazilian goalkeeper Bento is one shot-stopper Chelsea are currently interested in.

More performances such as the one against Sheffield United, and the club may very well decide to sign a new keeper like Bento.

And if that happens, then Petrovic and Robert Sanchez are likely to spend most of next season on the bench if they do not decide to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
