'Can't guarantee': Sky Sports journalist's immediate reaction after Everton deducted two further points

Well, Everton have finally learnt the outcome of their second PSR case.

Having been stung initially with a ten-point deduction in November, some sense was reached upon appeal as it was later reduced to six.

Still harsh, but a huge improvement which aided their Premier League position.

And with Nottingham Forest having since been dealt their own sanction, a four-point penalty, a new precedent has been set.

It seems that this is the same one that the latest independent commission has chosen to follow.

Everton learn outcome of their latest PSR case

However, with Everton having been deducted a further two points for another £16m overspend, the club are far from happy.

In their statement, released earlier today, they were forthright in their frustration at yet another tough ruling which has plunged them well and truly back into the relegation fight. Although, they were somewhat appreciative that it was not worse.

It remains harsh and unfair, but a measure of the Premier League’s disinterest in the fans and focus on regaining whatever strength they can with faux shows of power.

Now, speaking live on Sky Sports News immediately after the decision, reporter Anton Toloui noted: ‘Everton say they are consulting all their legal options right now to decide whether they will appeal or not.

‘I am going through this 60-page report that the Premier League have just put out and a big part of it is about double jeopardy. Now what that means is that Everton previously got their points deduction for the financial year before and a lot of this is about whether they are being punished for the same offence twice.

‘You go through this and the Premier League are basically saying they are taking this into account, this is going to be a benchmark decision, but Everton have breached those rules by over £16 million.

‘They are trying to set a benchmark for other clubs because there is so much ambiguity.

‘Everton have seven days to appeal this, now everybody wants to know will Everton or Nottingham Forest know their fate before the end of the season. The Premier League have set aside the 25th May. They would love it to be going into the last round of Premier League fixtures with everybody knowing where they stand with the points deductions.

‘We can’t guarantee that at the moment but we wait to see whether that is going to be the case or not.’

Everton can use Nottingham Forest’s appeal as a benchmark

We now know that Everton do plan to appeal, and will battle this charge in the same way that Forest already has done for their four-point deduction.

What’s useful is that they can oversee the success of that process and then decide whether they want to continue on that road.

There is little fortune in this outcome, but the Toffees have now surely seen the last of PSR for this season, and can put their full focus on ensuring Sean Dyche and his men do all they can to emerge from this campaign safe from the drop.
