'Actually played well': Pundit says 'fantastic' 28-year-old Manchester United star deserves credit after draw

Thomas Sorensen has suggested that one Manchester United player actually deserves a lot of credit for his performance against Liverpool on Sunday, which included one ‘fantastic’ moment in the first-half.

Manchester United fans will surely have mixed emotions about Sunday’s result. Of course, they will not mind the fact that they put a potential dent in Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes.

But doubts remain over what Erik ten Hag is trying to do at Old Trafford.

United were incredibly fortunate to still be in the game at half-time. Liverpool will be absolutely kicking themselves that they did not put the contest to bed.

Manchester United star deserves real credit after display against Liverpool

The visitors were poor in front of goal. But there was also a superb performance between the sticks from Andre Onana, with the 28-year-old making six saves, according to Whoscored.

Of course, the key moment came when Onana denied Dominik Szoboszlai in the early minutes with a stunning save.

And speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast, Thomas Sorensen suggested that the Cameroonian international’s display cannot go unnoticed while analysing how poor Liverpool were in front of goal.

“Yes, they had plenty of chances. We can go through, Szoboszlai, his couple of chances. I think Onana actually played well. We’ve got to give him some credit, he made a fantastic early save that could’ve probably opened the gates for Liverpool,” he said.

One stat shows Andre Onana is now one of the Premier League’s best

Onana took some time to get going at Manchester United following his move in the summer. But he is now looking like a number one who could have a very decent spell with the club.

That was a huge moment on Sunday when he denied Szoboszlai. It came shortly after Alejandro Garnacho had scored from an offside position, so it would have completely knocked the air out of the ground.

Onana has definitely silenced a lot of his doubters.

Only four Premier League goalkeepers perform better against their expected goals conceded this season, according to FBRef. And that is particularly important because of how many shots Manchester United seem to face.
