'Very critical': £40m Tottenham player admits he's not been playing his best recently

A key Tottenham Hotspur player has admitted he’s not been playing at his best in recent weeks.

Tottenham got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday and moved into the top four in the Premier League.

It wasn’t exactly a convincing display from Spurs after such a bright start to the game and they were fortunate to head into halftime on level terms.

Second-half goals from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro handed Ange Postecoglou’s side a deserved three points. But it’s fair to say that Tottenham haven’t exactly been convincing in recent weeks.

The north Londoners are struggling to recapture the early-season form which had them sitting top of the league after 10 games played.

That’s largely down to injuries and a few key players working their way back to full match sharpness following spells on the sidelines, including James Maddison.

The midfielder was arguably the ‘best player in the league’ before suffering an ankle injury against Chelsea back in November.

Since his return, Maddison has failed to recapture the form which earned him plaudits following his switch from Leicester City.

Maddison makes Tottenham form admission

Speaking to The Evening Standard, Maddison admitted he’s not quite at his best for Tottenham right now.

But the 27-year-old is confident he’s not far off the form he produced during the first 10 games of his Spurs career.

“I am very critical of myself,” he said. “Maybe I’m not at the heights that won me player of the month at the start of the season, but I am not too far away.”

Maddison’s stats for Tottenham

In his first 11 league games for Spurs, Maddison registered eight goal involvements.

Indeed, Maddison has managed just one goal and two assists in 10 league appearances after his injury.

Postecoglou will certainly be hoping the midfielder rediscovers his best form ahead of a crucial last seven games.

Spurs have their fate in their own hands in the race for the top four after moving above Villa over the weekend. Having Maddison firing on all cylinders once again would hand them an improved chance of pipping Unai Emery’s side to a Champions League spot.
