Exclusive: Manchester United plan major contract offer for breakthrough star

HITC understands that Manchester United are planning to offer defensive starlet Willy Kambwala a bumper new contract.

The French teenager is the latest youth product to make the breakthrough under Erik Ten Hag this season, as he followed on from the likes of team-mates Kobbie Mainoo and Omari Forson – who have all made their full debuts this term.

Kambwala, made his first Premier League start for United against West Ham United in December, was a stand-out performer against Liverpool as he began the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford at the weekend.

Praise

Ten Hag was quick to heap praise on the DR Congo-born stopper following his display, telling United’s website: “The decision to bring Willy in is because he has been a long time training with us and, in his first game against West Ham United, he also did very well, his progress is amazing.

“During training, we didn’t have any doubts and, for instance, we could have also brought Casemiro down and then bring another midfielder in.

“We were convinced he could do the job and he has done brilliant, I am very pleased, very happy and it is another signal and message of the future of Manchester United.

“This team, the squad has high potential and if we get more players available, especially in the backline, where we have 27 different organisations, across the season, then the future will be very good.

“Now it’s the challenge for him to do it consistently because, in the coming weeks, they will not return, so many players.

“So it’s a great opportunity for him. We have also other options. We can also bring Casemiro into a centre-half position. But I think, the choice for today, he absolutely deserved it and he showed it on the pitch.”

Talks

The 19-year-old has impressed United’s coaches and HITC is told that they have made it known to the club’s hierarchy that they should prioritise a new deal for Kambwala.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have told HITC that Kambwala is ‘very happy’ at Old Trafford and is delighted to be fully emersed in the first-team squad, as he has been for most of this season.

Kambwala’s current deal is due to expire in 2025 and the club are ready to offer him a long-term deal. Kambwala signed his first professional deal with United in 2021, having joined the club’s youth set-up from Sochaux.
