Manchester United have a number of problems at the moment.
The Red Devils’ recent form has been, with all due respect, woeful, and, as ever, a number of fingers have been pointed at problem players and problem positions.
One of the main criticisms levelled at United this season has been their lack of midfield presence, with Casemiro scapegoat number one more often than not.
Indeed, the Brazilian’s lack of pace has been a talking point in recent weeks. Many have stated that the former Real Madrid man’s legs have gone, and he’s not the only one.
Speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has been discussing United’s ongoing defensive problems, and he’s named another player at Old Trafford who he believes has lost their pace.
Manchester United player has lost his pace
Sutton spoke about Manchester United’s injury issues, and he’s claimed that Erik Ten Hag’s side haven’t actually missed Raphael Varane, claiming that the French defender just isn’t mobile anymore.
“Who have you really missed though? Shaw and Martinez? Varane? Come on, Varane isn’t the player he was, he’s not mobile anymore, let’s be truthful,” Sutton said.
Manchester United lack pace at the back
Sutton is right, this lack of pace in the defence is a real problem for Manchester United.
Many of the best teams in the world play with high defensive lines to apply pressure higher up the pitch, but United are unable to do that because their defenders are, quite simply, too slow.
Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire has been a regular partnership this season, and with all due respect, neither player is very quick.
In the past, Varane did have a fair bit of pace about him, but now, he’s seriously slowed down, and he’s certainly contributed to the Red Devils’ defensive issues this term.
We’re heading into yet another summer saying that United need a rebuild.
