Neville Southall predicts what 'big clubs' will do next after Everton's points deduction

Neville Southall has predicted what “so-called” big clubs will do next season after Everton were docked two more points by the Premier League.

The Toffees were hit with their second deduction of the season on Monday, moving Sean Dyche’s side down a place and now just two points off the drop zone.

A total of eight points have now been docked.

The verdict comes after a three-day hearing last week, in which the club admitted to a £16.6million breach. It’s believed the Premier League pushed for a five-point deduction, but two were handed out due to mitigating factors.

With both clubs set to appeal, there’s a genuine chance of the league table being decided after the season’s final day.

Furthermore, there has also been talk of changes to the current PSR rules, something Southall highlighted on Tuesday morning.

Manchester City are still awaiting the outcome of their 115 charges, and last week, reports emerged about what could happen to the rules that have significantly impacted Everton this season.

The Daily Mail reported last week that Premier League clubs are looking to scrap PSR and introduce a ‘luxury tax’. The fine-based system will replace points deductions.

Southall has suggested this new system is the league’s biggest clubs looking to escape potential points deductions further down the line.

Taking to X, the Everton legend said: “Everton will have points taken off them this season.
Next season point deduction will be replaced by fines, I think, and guess certain so-called big clubs be able to buy way out.”

Are Everton completely out of the woods?

Unfortunately, Everton aren’t completely out the woods regarding PSR. This latest report from iNews has suggested that more bad news could be on the way. The report claims another hearing could take place after the Premier League season has concluded.

James Gray writes: “iunderstands that this hearing, which will look at interest and loans taken out to finance the club’s new stadium, is likely to occur after the season ends.

“However, i understands any additional points deductions adjudicated this summer will be applied to next season’s standings, meaning the Toffees could start the 2024-25 season on negative points, the first team to do since the league was inaugurated in 1992.”

The sooner this mess is cleared up, the better for all concerned. Clarity and efficiency are required, something that has been lacking thus far.
