Liverpool insiders have just named a ‘strong contender’ to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield

Talk has increased over recent days that Liverpool are getting closer to hiring their new manager.

The Reds have been embroiled in the hunt to find the right successor for Jurgen Klopp ever since he announced his departure back in January.

With several possible contenders now out of the running, Sporting’s Ruben Amorim has emerged as an outstanding candidate. Chatter over the weekend suggested that talks had indeed commenced between Liverpool and Amorim.

Then, today, news of a breakthrough came. German journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that the Reds had come to a ‘verbal agreement’ with the 39-year-old to become their new manager.

Good though that may be, supporters have been waiting on some more official confirmation. And this afternoon, reporter James Pearce gave an update on whether that’s likely to arrive.

What has James Pearce reported today

Liverpool fans will have been excited by news on Tuesday that Amorim and Liverpool have come to an agreement.

There is still the need to negotiate a fee with Sporting of course, but that should really be seen as a formality. If the Portuguese manager and the Reds are on the same page, it should happen.

Such has been the noise surrounding Amorim today, that Pearce has obviously been compelled to go to his ‘senior sources’ at Liverpool and ask the question. The journalist then took to X this afternoon to share his findings.

“Amorim clearly a strong contender for LFC job but senior club sources adamant he hasn’t been offered the job, no verbal agreement etc,” he says.

“Club still doing due diligence around a number of viable candidates.”

Who are the other contenders for Liverpool

This all sounds a little like Liverpool dancing around the fact but refusing to confirm it. By now it seems relatively common knowledge that the Reds are in conversation with Amorim.

However, clearly, nothing is quite done yet. And that still leaves the door open for other candidates to throw their hats into the ring.

One of those could be Julian Nagelsmann, who had reportedly ‘scored highly’ in internal metrics measured by the club. Thiago Motta is another who has been mentioned heavily. The 41-year-old has been doing well with Bologna and his contract is up in the summer.

Still, Liverpool perhaps would not confirm Amorim as a contender if they weren’t some way along the line with him. Suppose we’ll just have to wait and see. No white smoke just yet, anyway.
