Three people were injured and 13 residents have been displaced in a blaze at three-family building on 31st Street in Bayonne Monday night, city Fire Chief Keith Weaver said.
One adult and two children were taken to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation in the fire at 35 East 31st Street, between Broadway and Avenue E. Four newborn kittens were rescued from the building by firefighters.
A total of 13 residents have been temporarily displaced and are under the care of the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross. A fire investigation is underway to determine the cause.
Weaver said firefighters responded at 7:23 p.m. on a report of smoke. Arriving companies found a working fire on the second floor of the three-story building and used two handlines to extinguish the blaze, which was brought under control at 7:52 p.m.
