Arnold Schwarzenegger regrets passing on classic movie he calls a 'straight 10'

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently spilled some serious tea during his appearance on the New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, acknowledging a classic movie he regrets passing on.

No matter how rich and famous, regrets are inescapable, and some of Hollywood‘s biggest names haven’t shied away from revealing theirs over the years. For actors, you’ll sometimes hear them reminiscing upon movies they turned down that they perhaps shouldn’t have, whether that’s Matt Damon passing on Avatar, the highest-grossing film ever made, or Will Smith, who passed on playing Neo in The Matrix. If you’re an Arnold Schwarzenegger fan, you may be racking your brain for what film he could possibly regret swerving, but there’s no more room for speculation now thanks to New Heights…

Arnold Schwarzenegger tells New Heights he regrets passing on 1996 movie The Rock

Arnold recently stopped by for an enlightening chat on the New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce podcast, who like Arnie, likely needs no introduction at this point. Especially to all Taylor Swift fans.

The brothers had the golden opportunity to ask the 76-year-old icon and former Governor of California some deep-dive questions, and retired NFL star Jason was able to ask which movie he passed on that he deeply wished he’d have accepted.

“There was a movie called The Rock with Sean Connery,” he answered openly. “So, they came to me with a script that was only 80 pages, instead of 120 which normally scripts are.”

He recalled that there were “… a lot of handwritten scribbles in it. And they tried to explain it to me, ‘Oh, this is what we are going to write.’ So, I said, ‘Look guys why don’t you just come back when it’s finished?’ I said, ‘This is half-baked. I’m not going to make a commitment.”’

With a handful of other projects already in motion, Arnie explained he was already busy, and it wouldn’t exactly have been hard to believe that, of all people, he was in high demand.

Nicolas Cage took the role offered to Arnie

Released in 1996, The Rock is an American action thriller from director Michael Bay, best known for the likes of Bad Boys and Transformers.

It tells the story of a disillusioned general who rallies some troops to storm a naval weapons depot and threaten the government with the threat of attacking San Francisco with rockets.

The Pentagon organizes an elite squad headed by a former SAS captain (played by James Bond legend Sean Connery) and an FBI chemist named Stanley Godspeed. The role of Stanley ultimately went to another acting icon, Nicolas Cage, and The Rock would arguably have been a very different film if Arnie had accepted the role instead.

It’s clear why he regrets passing on it. After all, you speak to any fans of ’90s action cinema, and they’ll no doubt champion The Rock as a standout. But with Arnie’s track record? We think we’ll let him off. The Rock might be great, but you still won’t see it chosen over the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

“[Nicolas Cage] took it … and did a great job with it,” Arnold was ready to admit during the podcast interview. “And the movie was fantastic even though I was not in it. [Nic] did a fantastic job. [Sean] was great. The directing was great. The writing, everything was really a straight 10… I really enjoyed the movie. But that was one movie … I wish I would’ve taken.”

He might regret not making it, but you won’t regret watching.

The Rock is streaming on Hulu.
