'But there are': What some in Portugal actually think about idea of Liverpool appointing Amorim - journalist

Journalist Ben Jacobs has shared what some in Portugal think about the prospect of Ruben Amorim becoming the next Liverpool manager.

It does appear that Ruben Amorim is in the driving seat to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

In fact, reports on Tuesday even claimed that Amorim has verbally agreed to take the Liverpool job from the summer.

Those reports have since been played down. But it definitely seems that the 39-year-old is on the Reds’ radar as they prepare to make one of the most important decisions in the club’s recent history.

Amorim has won a lot of admirers with the work he has done at Sporting. And the club now find themselves four points clear at the top of the Portuguese top-flight. They also have a game in hand over Benfica.

However, speaking on The Debrief, Ben Jacobs believes that while Amorim would make sense as Klopp’s successor, some actually have their doubts about whether it would be the right move.

“Stylistically as well, it would lead to a very smooth transition between the kind of football that Klopp plays and Amorim’s philosophy. He’s very data driven. But there are those within Portugal that feel that a step-up to Liverpool would be a risk,” he said.

Portuguese’s decision looks a simple one if Reds come calling

Many will be expecting Klopp’s successor to struggle whoever it is. He is one of those managers who has defined this particular era in football.

He has somehow put his name alongside the legendary list of managers Liverpool have already had. And, based on this season, he is leaving at a time when there appears to still be plenty in the tank.

So it is going to be a huge task for his successor.

But Amorim may feel that this opportunity may not come around again.

With that, he may think – if offered the job – that it is a gamble that he simply cannot refuse.
