2 N.J. residents on Forbes list of world’s 400 richest people

Two New Jersey residents are among the 400 wealthiest people in the world, according to a new list published by Forbes.

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen and a part owner of the New Jersey Devils’ and the Philadelphia 76ers owners — Josh Harris — are also in the top 400, though neither reside in New Jersey.

A couple of former Garden State residents also are also among the world’s wealthiest.

The richest New Jerseyan, according to Forbes, is once again Rocco Commisso, the founder and CEO of cable company Mediacom. Commisso, 74, of Saddle River, landed at No. 322 on the Forbes world list with a net worth of about $8 billion.

Commisso immigrated from Italy in 1962 at age 12 and took his first job playing the accordion during intermissions at movie theaters, Forbes said. He ranked No. 114 on the Forbes 400 list in 2023, but that only included Americans.

He bought the Italian soccer team Fiorentina in 2019 for an estimated $150 million to $200 million.

In addition to Commisso, Millburn resident John Overdeck cracked the top 400. The co-founder of the hedge fund firm Two Sigma Investments, ranked No. 364 worldwide. He’s worth $7.3 billion, the same as last fall, Forbes said.

The 54-year-old Millburn resident, whom Forbes called a math prodigy, won a silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad when he was 16.

Overdeck has donated more than $300 million to his charitable foundation, which supports education programs and research, according to Forbes.

Home Depot founder Bernard Marcus is worth $10.4 billion, good for 216th on the list. The 94-year-old is a graduate of South Side High School in Newark and Rutgers University in New Brunswick. He lives in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, former Short Hills resident David Tepper is worth $20.6 billion, ranking him 94th. The Carolina Panthers owner is the founder of hedge fund giant Appaloosa Management. He moved to Florida in 2016.

The ranking of 2,781 billionaires is topped by Frenchman Bernard Arnault, whose family has a net worth of $217 billion. Arnault is in charge of LVMH, which owns 75 fashion and cosmetics brands, including Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and Sephora.

No. 2 on the list is Elon Musk, who has a net worth of about $195 billion, according to Forbes. That’s down from $251 billion in September 2023.

Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris takes questions from the media during a press conference at the NBA basketball team's facility, Thursday, June 1, 2023, in Camden, N.J.

Musk, 52, is the founder of electric car maker Tesla and rocket producer SpaceX. He acquired Twitter in October 2022 before rebranding it as X.

Jeff Bezos, the 60-year-old founder and executive chairman of Amazon, is worth an estimated $194 billion and was ranked third. His net worth has jumped from $161 billion last year.

Cohen, the Mets owner, is ranked 97th with a net worth of $19.8 billion. The 67-year-old made his fortune in hedge funds and resides in Greenwich, Connecticut. A life-long Mets fan, he bought the team for $2.4 billion in 2020. Cohen has donated more than $1 billion to charitable causes.
