'You never know': Rohl drops Sheffield Wednesday injury update after 4 key players missed Norwich draw

Danny Rohl has suggested that Sheffield Wednesday could welcome some key players back to full fitness this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday picked up a vital point last night as they fought back from 2-0 down to claim a draw against Norwich City.

Some poor defending saw the Canaries take a comfortable lead inside the first quarter, but a spirited second half display led to late goals from Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith – both from the unlikely source of set pieces.

The Owls were able to welcome back long-term absentees Josh Windass and Callum Paterson in the win over QPR, but were without a further four players last night.

Ike Ugbo joined Ian Poveda, Di’Shon Bernard and Marvin Johnson on the sidelines for yesterday’s game, though Danny Rohl has suggested that some of them may return to action this weekend.

Danny Rohl could welcome back some key players

Speaking to The Star after last night’s draw, the German said: “We have Ugbo, Poveda, Di’Shon, Marvin Johnson – when you look to these four guys they could be starters but are out for the moment… Hopefully they come back, but you never know. This is now our job to bring them back, but today it was important that the players on our bench made an impact and it’s great to see.

“We’ll try it, you never know. When you play on a Tuesday and then a Saturday it’s just three days, but we’ll see who is available and then I’ll choose my starting XI.”

One injured star could struggle to get back into the team

Sheffield Wednesday really struggled defensively in the early stages of their clash at Hillsborough, and while they fought back, the return of Di’Shon Bernard could be vital.

Johnson has also been a key part of the Owls’ campaign and also adds more of an attacking dimension to that of Akin Famewo.

Wednesday have coped quite well further up the pitch without some of their senior players, with Michael Smith being one man to step up in recent games.

The striker had only started once since October prior to the QPR win, but has proven to be a vital cog in a positive few days at Hillsborough.

Ike Ugbo’s goals have also been very important this year, but with him missing out due to injury yesterday, he may struggle to find his place back in the starting line-up if fit this weekend.

Rohl will be delighted to have this selection issues though – it’s very promising that some players are starting to really step it up when they are needed.
