'Fair play': BBC Norfolk pundit sends message to Danny Rohl after Sheffield Wednesday v Norwich

Sheffield Wednesday were inspired in their 2-2 comeback draw vs Norwich City on Tuesday.

Sheffield Wednesday were two goals behind early doors in the game against Norwich City at Hillsborough.

Passes out from the back and poor defending to match saw Danny Rohl animated on the sidelines once more.

Though whatever was said in the changing rooms at half-time changed the game.

That, and Rohl’s quadruple change and apparent change in focus helped the turn tide in Sheffield Wednesday’s favour.

We’ve never seen Rohl make a quadruple change.

He brought on Callum Paterson, Will Vaulks, Kristian Pedersen, and Pol Valentin, changing the shape slightly as well it looking like another 5-3-2 formation.

Though it was fluid, whatever the intended shape from Rohl was.

Sheffield Wednesday penned Norwich in and peppered their penalty area with Vaulks’ long throws, though it was two of the Welshman’s pinpoint crosses that sealed the comeback.

They were met by Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith respectively, with the Owls scoring from corners for what feels like the first time all season.

And after the game, pundit and former Sheffield Wednesday defender Leigh Bromby gave his verdict on the game, saying on BBC Norfolk:

“I thought there was a gulf. A real gulf in what Norwich were trying to do, and how Sheffield Wednesday eventually got into the game because Norwich were so good.”

Bromby continued:

“Some of the play from Norwich was outstanding; with the ball, without the ball, and you can’t knock any of them tonight because Sheffield Wednesday had to resort to something different. They brought on four people at half-time. There were long throws going in. That was the only way they were going to score against Norwich. And fair play to the manager for adapting.”

Danny Rohl will have learned one major thing after Norwich

Rohl will have learned plenty from Tuesday’s game.

It felt like a schooling in Championship football for the Football League’s youngest coach, and perhaps a lesson in relegation fighting too.

But if there’s one thing that Rohl will have learned vs Norwich, it’s that a more classical approach to football, e.g. putting balls into the box where big players lie waiting, can often be the answer.

It was certainly the answer against Norwich.

Sheffield Wednesday paid for their attempts at pretty football in the first half but as soon as they got down and dirty, with the message epitomised by Paterson who was a game-changer, the Owls were rewarded.

Rohl certainly deserves praise for adapting against Norwich.

The Owls now find themselves in 22nd.
