Gerry McCulloch's amusing dig at Rangers penalty decision vs Celtic

Celtic fans will now be looking forward to our clash against St Mirren this weekend in the aftermath of our chaotic Glasgow Derby draw.

The Bhoys were embroiled in a tussle that didn’t pass without incident amid a penalty being awarded for both sides sandwiched in between six goals at Ibrox.

Ten minutes into the second half, Fabio Silva was initially booked for diving in the area after colliding with Alistair Johnston.

John Beaton overturned the decision once he had a look at the monitor; nevertheless, Celtic have released a statement questioning whether the referee was shown the full picture on the VAR monitor.

Per IFAB rules, a challenge can be overturned if it possesses ‘careless, reckless, or has excess force’, none of which appeared to apply to the Canadian’s challenge from first viewing, though there have been various other permutations floated in the days since full-time.

Either way, James Tavernier capitalised from the spot, and the rest of the fixture unfolded accordingly before Celtic communicated on the incident.

A club spokesperson stated: “The club has been in correspondence with the Scottish FA regarding the VAR process throughout the season, and has also played an active part in the SPFL working group which is seeking to work with the Scottish FA to improve standards for all clubs.

“We have raised our further concerns regarding the VAR process in the match with the Scottish FA and await a response.”

Gerry McCulloch makes amusing dig at penalty decision

Yesterday evening, Arsenal took on Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium in an entertaining tie that resulted in a 2-2 draw.

In the dying embers of proceedings, Bukayo Saka raced through on goal before coming together with Manuel Neuer, though the referee gave no penalty despite screams from the home crowd.

Taking to social media platform X, Celtic correspondent Gerry McCulloch seemingly made a tongue-in-cheek dig at the weekend’s decision, stating the following below.

Examining referee calls over and over can be tiring; however, McCulloch makes a good point regarding the permutations that need to be in place for a penalty to be awarded.

Nevertheless, we move on, and St Mirren this Saturday will be the only task Brendan Rodgers has on his mind amid our ongoing pursuit of a domestic double.
