Philippe Clement's bizarre claim about Celtic draw with Rangers

Celtic emerged from an afternoon of chaos at Ibrox with a point that has kept Brendan Rodgers’ men at the Scottish Premiership summit.

In truth, Rodgers will feel his side should’ve won the game; however, Rangers manager Philippe Clement has put forward an interesting turn of events in his own post-match analysis.

Cited via Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, the 50-year-old made some bizarre observations to the press, including a claim that his side were ‘moral winners’ on a day where the points were shared in Glasgow’s southside.

As we can see above, the full excerpt read: “I think we are the moral winners of this afternoon because a few months ago, this team could not have reacted after going 2-0 down in an Old Firm.”

Presumably, the Belgian is eluding to Rangers’ fightback from two goals down, which was followed by a 93rd-minute strike by Rabbi Matondo to cancel out efforts from Daizen Maeda, Matt O’Riley and Adam Idah.

Celtic won’t read too much into strange Clement claims

Clement has reason to be pleased that his side managed to salvage a draw today; however, it is a tad peculiar to cite a ‘moral’ victory when you couldn’t record three points in front of a capacity home support, with no away fans present.

Celtic didn’t make life easy for themselves in the second half and were duly punished; nevertheless, the spoils were shared on a day when the Bhoys went to Ibrox and had more shots on goal and on target, a higher Expected Goal total and created more big chances than their opponents [Fotmob].

In the grand scheme of things, that means nothing compared to the result, though it is an indicator that the visitors were able to gain real offensive joy at times in the game.
