Chelsea need to listen to Joe Cole's transfer advice after what we just saw in the Champions League - opinion

Joe Cole gave Chelsea a piece of transfer advice last month that now looks brilliant based on something that happened in the Champions League last night.

Chelsea are staring down the barrel of a second straight season of mediocrity.

The Blues are ninth-placed in the Premier League table facing an uphill battle to qualify for Europe. Plus, they face Manchester City in an FA Cup semi-final, which is their last chance of winning a trophy this campaign.

LondonWorld reports that Chelsea’s owners are standing firm by Mauricio Pochettino and will assess the manager’s situation in the summer.

We think most supporters would agree this squad may need some fresh additions in the transfer window, which is a reminder of previous failures in the market. So, will Mauricio Pochettino still be the man in the dugout to oversee spending this summer.

Regardless of who’s in charge, Chelsea should target an individual suggested to them very recently.

Chelsea should listen to Joe Cole advice

It’s only a few weeks ago that Chelsea cult hero Joe Cole suggested his former club look at signing some players with real top-level experience to help a young squad. In particular, Joe Cole suggested Real Madrid’s Luka Modric as a player the Blues should look at.

He told talkSPORT: “I’d be looking to bring in some experienced players who set the tone. I’m thinking Luka Modric. Does he want to come and play in the Premier League for one more year? He’s still doing bits at Real Madrid.”

Real Madrid legend Luka Modric, who’s now aged 38, is still covered with world-class quality.

The Croatian central midfielder is out of contract at the Bernabeu this summer with no announcement yet about his future.

Could Chelsea try tempt him back to the Premier League for one final chapter at the end of his career? For now, it’s purely imaginative as there’s been zero Blues transfer links to the Madrid star.

Luka Modric did something brilliant in the Champions League last night

The way Modric came off the bench on Tuesday night and played in Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final tie with Manchester City blew our mind.

Madrid and Man City played out a remarkable 3-3 draw in the first leg of the European tie.

For anybody who missed it, Modric came on the pitch for the final 20 minutes and glided around it like he was still in his prime.

There’s no doubt in our mind the veteran midfielder can still play at the highest level with his exquisite passing and football IQ, so we’re warming to Joe Cole’s idea of contacting Luka Modric with a cheeky one-year offer.
