'Sources are telling me': Chelsea now 'highly unlikely' to sign £35m player this summer - journalist

Chelsea could try to sign a new central defender ahead of the 2024/25 season.

However, it looks like one Premier League star will not be joining Chelsea this summer despite interest from the club.

Thiago Silva is likely to leave Stamford Bridge when the campaign finishes, which is one reason for bringing in a new centre-back.

His contract expires in June and Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that the club are yet to discuss the player’s future.

Chelsea have also had a few injury problems in that area of the pitch, with Wesley Fofana failing to kick a ball this season.

The Premier League centre-back Chelsea are now unlikely to sign

When you consider all of the above, it would not be a shock to see Chelsea enter the transfer market for another centre-half.

In terms of potential candidates to come in, it appears that the Blues have looked close to home.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, they have discussed Sven Botman’s name internally.

However, the journalist has claimed on Substack that the Newcastle United star is a “super unrealistic target” and that Chelsea signing him is unlikely to happen.

He wrote: “Sources are telling me that any move to try and sign him this summer is now highly unlikely and Toon are obviously not keen to let him go at all. It was always a super unrealistic target, but another one that was discussed internally.”

The Newcastle United player Chelsea should really be targeting instead of Sven Botman

Botman would not have been a bad signing for Chelsea. The Dutchman has proven himself at Newcastle since arriving from Lille in a £35m deal.

Last season, he made 3.3 clearances per game, which was the second-highest average in Eddie Howe’s squad (WhoScored).

If Chelsea are planning to raid their Premier League rivals, though, then Alexander Isak is the man who they should be considering.

The 24-year-old has scored 19 goals in 33 appearances this term. He could add some more firepower to this current Chelsea side.
