£25m Tottenham player says Chris Hughton was like his ‘Dad’ and helped him so much

A Tottenham Hotspur player has now admitted Chris Hughton was like a Dad to him with the amount of advice he gave him.

Under Ange Postecoglou, things are looking on the up for Tottenham who are knocking on the door of a top four finish.

The Lilywhites are currently sat in fourth spot following their win on the weekend over Nottingham Forest.

But Spurs will face a tough run of game over the coming weeks with the North London Derby also on the horizon.

Postecoglou has relied heavily on his options from the bench in recent weeks with Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg transforming the game on Sunday.

The Australian has brought a lot of positive change at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, he has been said not to be a man manager at Hotspur Way.

One former Spurs man who clearly is, though, is Chris Hughton who has been revealed to be just that having guided on of the current Spurs players.

Tottenham player reveals relationship with former Spurs player Chris Hughton

One Spurs player who enjoyed a bright start under Postecoglou was midfielder Yves Bissouma.

The Mali international has since endured a difficult spell with the Lilywhites having recently been named as their most underperforming player since October.

And that was summed up on the weekend against Forest after his bright start then saw him withdrawn at half time.

Bissouma had an involvement in Chris Wood’s as he failed to track back with any real purpose and it was apparent that frustrated Postecoglou.

Spurs signed Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion back in 2022 for a fee in the region of £25m.

Speaking on the Tottenham YouTube channel, Bissouma admitted his former Brighton manager, Hughton, played a big role in his development.

“Chris Hughton was like a Dad to me. I was happy because I was playing Premier League football. But at the same time, it was really hard because I was alone and I didn’t speak the language. I went out to training and I didn’t really understand what was being said,” Bissouma said.

“So Chris was there to help me every day. Every day to make me understand what he really wanted to do on the pitch. He was very honest with me.”

“Even outside the pitch, he gave me a lot of advice. You know, he was texting me every day. He helped me a lot to be where I am today.”

Will Yves Bissouma start against Newcastle after being hooked off?

The victory over Forest came after Bissouma was hooked off by Postecoglou alongside his midfield partner Pape Matar Sarr.

Bissouma has endured some really testing past few months which have seen him in and out of form for both club and conutry.

Even the Mali manager left him out of the latest national squad which is believed to have seen Bissouma left furious.

After the game on Sunday, Postecoglou told the media: “It wasn’t anything Biss or Pape did. I just thought, I have the luxury of a strong squad now which I didn’t for the middle part of the year and I thought we needed some energy and legs in the midfield for the second half because I could see Forest were working really hard to maintain their grip on the game.

“I thought Pierre and Roddy were outstanding in the energy they brought and the quality they brought in the second half.”

It feels incredibly unlikely Bissouma will keep his spot in the starting XI on Saturday on Tyneside.
