Ange Postecoglou hints ‘fantastic’ Tottenham player would be allowed to leave in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has now opened the door for one of his players to potentially leave this summer.

In what has been a promising season for the Lilywhites, Ange Postecoglou has been working on making this Tottenham squad his own.

A number of new faces have already come through the doors at Hotspur Way since his arrival with the backing of Daniel Levy.

Players such as James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have not needed much time at all to bed themselves into the starting XI at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And the Dutch defender, in particular, has quickly become a fan favourite with many taking to social media to laud his display on Tuesday against West Ham.

However, there have been some casualties from the squad Postecoglou inherited who have just not made the cut under the Australian.

Spurs have sent a number of players out on loan like Joe Rodon and Ashley Phillips who have both enjoyed seriously impressive spells away from the club.

But some players have remained at the club and could well be looking for a route out of north London when the summer window opens.

Postecoglou says player can leave if he wants more game time

Welcoming a new manager is always going to see some players not take to his fancy.

And that has certainly been the case in north London with individuals like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who looks set to leave in the summer.

The Dane has struggled to earn regular minutes under the 58-year-old and has even signed up with an Italian agency with reported interest from Serie A.

But Hojbjerg isn’t the only player who has found himself outside of Postecoglou’s plans with the Australian establishing a core group of player at Spurs.

The Spurs News understand the club will be looking to add even more players to their squad this summer with the addition of some quality additions.

However, Argentine international Giovani Lo Celso could be a player who makes some room in the squad with a summer departure.

The 27-year-old has played just 441 minutes in the Premier League this season despite remaining a regular for Argentina.

Reports have claimed his future is now look uncertain in north London with the transfer window just months out.

Speaking to the media on Friday from the Spurs training facilities, Postecoglou hinted Lo Celso is allowed to leave if he wants more regular minutes.

“Through that middle patch when we had a lot of injuries, he really stood up for us and then got his own injury of course. He made a real impact against Luton at weekend and it really helped us get over the line. Look, he’s a fantastic player, but with all these things you’ve got to keep the perspective that we’re at a big club, we’re going to have a big squad and if it is not Gio, it will be someone else that will play that role next year.

“No one will play every game. It doesn’t happen. It doesn’t happen at all the big clubs, so I am never really worried about the game-time players are playing. If they want more game-time, there are other clubs where they can do that and I’m looking at contribution. With someone like Gio, like I said he has contributed to us this year and that’s been the most important thing for me.”

Lo Celso hit Spurs milestone against Luton

Having joined the club back in 2019 for a figure around £55m (initially joining on loan) Lo Celso hit his 100 Tottenham appearance last weekend.

It just goes to show how little Lo Celso has actually played for the club when you consider Pedro Porro – who joined last January – has already racked up 46 appearances.

Here is a brief summary of Lo Celso’s time at Spurs in numbers.

  • 101 appearances
  • 10 goals
  • 8 assists
  • 2 loans away
  • 17 appearances under Postecoglou

But the Argentine remains positive as he took to Instagram on Saturday saying, “Happy to get the 3 points and very proud to make my 100th appearance for this brilliant club. As always, thanks to all our fans for your support. More to come COYS”.
