‘Could be massive’: Journalist wowed by 30-year-old Sheffield Wednesday ace who had Hillsborough buzzing

Sheffield Wednesday came back to earn a share of the spoils against Norwich City last night as the fight for survival goes on. Goals from Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith salvaged a deserved point for the Owls.

This was an entertaining affair under the Hillsborough floodlights. The first half was somewhat drab but after Danny Rohl made four substitutions at half-time, the team came roaring back.

One of those changes saw Callum Paterson come in for more game time after his injury lay-off. He played for 21 minutes on Saturday at QPR and managed to come through 45 last night unscathed.

It’s been a frustrating time of things for the 29-year-old who hadn’t featured since Boxing Day when the Owls were beaten by Coventry. Now, however, he’s back and ready to push the team towards safety.

Journalist Joe Crann has now delivered his verdict on Paterson after his showing last night as Wednesday fought back to draw. We’ve looked at what he had to say about the player…

Joe Crann delivers update on performance of Callum Paterson

It was a wonderful second-half performance from a Wednesday perspective. In parts they made a team that look destined for a play-off place look pretty ordinary in this Hillsborough clash.

Ihiekwe and Smith might have scored the goals but Paterson was one of the driving forces behind the positive result. He got the fans out of their seats and in the process, he’s earned praise from Crann.

He posted on his official X account: “Tonight was another one of those games where it’s so glaringly obvious what Callum Paterson brings to the party. He not only changed the game, but his willingness to chase and press lifted the crowd completely. Could be massive for #SWFC in this run-in.”

Paterson will now push for starts during business end of the season

The beauty of having Paterson ready and available to call upon his ability he’s got to play absolutely anywhere. Paterson has a long throw and he always gives every ounce of blood, sweat and tears out on the pitch.

It’s been a long road back to full fitness for the man with 17 caps for Scotland. However, this isn’t Paterson’s first rodeo when it comes to bouncing back from injury setbacks and he will now be desperate to play his part.

Danny Rohl is going to need all of his players between now and the end of the season. With just four games remaining, it really is a case of sink or swim for Wednesday in the Championship.

It’s now looking extremely important that Paterson can keep himself fit for the final quartet of games. If he does, Wednesday will have every chance of getting themselves above the dotted line.
