Player Liverpool released in 2020 is now top scorer for his new club

Liverpool have produced a number of truly exceptional talents in recent years.

The Reds have developed the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Raheem Sterling, Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley, Neco Williams, Caoimhin Kelleher and Jarell Quansah to name just a handful.

Going even further back, Liverpool can be proud to say they also produced gems such as Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler.

However, there are always a few who slip through the net – only to shine elsewhere – something we are now seeing with Dal Varesanovic…

Dal Varesanovic now shining after Liverpool release

Well, Liverpool signed the Austrian wonderkid from Sarajevo back in 2017.

Varesanovic struggled at Anfield – however – and made just four appearances for Liverpool’s U21 side during his time on Merseyside, scoring one goal while assisting another.

The Reds eventually released the attacking midfielder in 2020 before he sealed a swift return to Sarajevo, and he is now shining at Çaykur Rizespor – who he earned a move to in 2023.

Varesanovic is the Turkish side’s top scorer in the Süper Lig so far this season with nine goals in 28 league appearances, and he has now spoken about how his tough stint at Liverpool actually helped him.

22-year-old grateful for tough time at Anfield

The 22-year-old told NTV Spor: “It is impossible to say no when a team like Liverpool comes to you. I was separated from my family for the first time at a young age. Mentally, maybe I wasn’t ready for this. I experienced a lot of difficulties like this in Liverpool.

“The problems I experienced there made me stronger today. Seeing the difficulties early in Liverpool was a plus for me.”

Varesanovic also sounded quite surprised to be sitting top of Çaykur Rizespor’s scoring ranks this season, adding: “I did not think that I could be the top scorer of the team.”

While Liverpool sadly could not benefit from seeing the Vienna-born attacker’s quality early on, it is at least pleasing to hear that his time at Anfield helped him become a force in Turkish football.
