'You never know': £25m Arsenal man opens door to re-joining his old club

If Arsenal are going to be able to spend cash on new signings this summer, it is likely that they will have to sell in order to bring in some funds to spend – and to ease any Financial Fairplay concerns.

Reports have already stated that Eddie Nketiah may be offloaded to ease Financial Fairplays issues, and allow Mikel Arteta and Edu to spend big on perhaps a new striker, and a left-back in the coming months.

Plenty of other fringe players may be shown the door at the end of the season. The likes of Reiss Nelson are attracting interest from other Premier League clubs and he would be one that Arsenal could offload.

Those out on loan could also be about to wave goodbye permanently, playing their last game for The Gunners. Five senior players are currently out on loan, including Arthur Okonkwo at AFC Wrexham.

Arsenal need to sell fringe players to raise cash this summer

Albert Sambi Lokonga, Marquinhos, Nuno Tavares and Kieran Tierney may all struggle to have any kind of future at The Emirates. Left-back Tierney starred initially, before injury, after his £25m move from Celtic.

The 26-year-old joined Arsenal in 2019 after playing 170 times for Celtic, where he broke into the first team from the academy. But he has struggled of late, injury seeing him go out on loan to Real Sociedad.

In Spain, he has had more injury issues – but mostly niggly injuries that have kept him out for a few games here, and a few games there. He has still managed to play 22 times in all competitions this term.

But those two hamstring injuries have seen him miss 17 games in both league and cup. Arsenal will hardly be enticed to give Tierney another go, despite Arteta needing a new left-back ahead of the summer.

What Kieran Tierney has said about a possible return to Celtic

It leaves his future up in the air. Once billed as one of the best young left-backs in Europe, he is now at a crossroads in his career – and he has said himself he does not know if he will be at Arsenal next season.

This week, Tierney spoke to TalkSPORT and was asked by Jim White if there is a chance he could ever return to his beloved Celtic at some point in his career. Tierney answered by opening the door to a move.

“Who knows? You never know in football; it’s a connection that I’ll always have, somewhere I imagine I’ll always be linked with if I’m to move from any club, so you never know,” Tierney said today, on TalkSPORT.

The chances of Celtic signing him soon, though, are slim. He cost Arsenal a huge fee and they will want most of it back to sell. Tierney’s wages will also be too much for Celtic. Perhaps later on, in his career.
