Jason McAteer says he would pay £50m to hire 'genius' manager at Liverpool

Liverpool’s search for a new manager has not got any clearer since Xabi Alonso announced he would be staying put at Bayer Leverkusen – with plenty of names being continually touted with the job.

Of course, Jurgen Klopp has announced he will be leaving Anfield in the summer – saying he is getting tired of being the club’s manager. His contract is due to expire in 2026, but he will leave this summer.

Plenty of managers are being linked after Alonso’s decision. Sporting Lisbon gaffer Ruben Amorim and Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi seem to be the two managers that are on top of Liverpool’s radar.

But a surprise candidate is Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou. Danny Murphy recently said that he would love Postecoglou at Anfield if he had a choice – claiming the Aussie manager is a Liverpool fan.

Liverpool still yet to make manager decision as Klopp departs

Jurgen Klinsmann does not think Postecoglou will move to Merseyside, but given the power Liverpool have there is every chance they could tempt the former Celtic boss in a move to the Liverpool dugout.

Speaking on BeIN Sports, former Liverpool man Jason McAteer – who is a renowned Reds fan – was asked if he would take Postecoglou at Anfield, even if the manager would set Liverpool back a huge £50m man.

“If you are Liverpool and you identify Postecoglou, would you pay £50m for him?” Richard Keys asked McAteer. He responded on BeIn Sports: “Would I pay it? Would I pay £50m? Yeah I probably would.”

Do Liverpool stand any chance of getting Postecoglou?

Judging by Murphy’s comments and the fact Postecoglou is a Liverpool fan, maybe there is a chance that Liverpool – more than any other club – can get Postecoglou out of Spurs. But, it does seem unlikely.

Postecoglou is really impressing at Tottenham and he feels more of a project manager than the recent gaffers Spurs have had, like Antonio Conte or Jose Mourinho. Spurs will obviously fight to keep him.

Signing a four-year deal at Tottenham last summer, Postecoglou still has three years remaining on his contract and you would imagine that will see him stay in North London for the time being, this summer.
