Report: Newcastle United are now likely to sell 'unplayable' £21m star this summer

Newcastle United may need to sell before they buy this summer, which could be bad news for one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted players.

The Magpies were unable to strengthen during the January transfer window because of profit and sustainability, and it looks set to be an issue once again this summer. That is why there are so many rumours about Bruno Guimaraes leaving the club, amid his £100million release clause.

Obviously, Newcastle want to keep Bruno. However, there are some players who the club could look to move on when the summer transfer window opens.

And one of those is a player who the club tried to sell and nearly cashed in on during the January transfer window.

Newcastle could sell first-team star before June 30th

During January, there were rumours about Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron departing St James’ Park. In fact, it was even claimed that Newcastle were trying to sell the latter, with a move to Saudi Arabia on the cards.

However, that did not materialise and Almiron remained on Tyneside. But it looks like his Toon career could be coming to an end soon.

That is according to iNews, who claim that Newcastle are likely to sell Almiron this summer. They state that a move before the end of June could be sanctioned, as that is the end of the Premier League’s accounting period with regards to profit and sustainability.

Miguel Almiron is not performing as well this season

Signed for £21million when Rafa Benitez was manager, Almiron has developed into a key player for Eddie Howe. He is a workhorse down that right flank, and is capable of delivering what the manager wants tactically.

The 30-year-old was immense last season, playing a crucial role in helping Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. He enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his career, and was described as ‘unplayable’ at times by Dan Burn.

However, Almiron has not been as impactful this season. His numbers are much worse, as highlighted below.

Almiron has been a good player for Newcastle over the years, but this summer feels like the right time to cash in. The Magpies need more quality in his position, while he is at an age where we can still get decent money for him.

One player unlikely to leave Newcastle this summer is Joelinton

But while Almiron looks likely to leave, one player who seems set to stay is Joelinton. That is because the Brazil international is on the brink of signing a new contract at St James’ Park.

There were fears he would be sold, with his current deal expiring in 2025. And with negotiations stalling, it looked like Newcastle would need to move him on this summer to avoid losing him for nothing next year.

But contract talks have been going in the right direction ever since Amanda Staveley took over, and it has now been reported that he is on course to sign a new four-year deal.
