Bayer Leverkusen eye Leeds United transfer swoop for key star in summer window

With the summer transfer window just around the corner, Leeds United will have to work hard to keep some of their best players.

Leeds United have a huge few weeks ahead, with the Championship promotion race nearing a thrilling climax. Just one point separates Leicester in first and the Whites in third, underlining just how fiercely contested the league is.

While a return to the Premier League is the most important goal for the near future, eyes will naturally cast towards the summer transfer window. No matter the division, there is likely to be some player turnover at the end of the campaign.

Some of that business will include upgrades in positions while looking to keep hold of the best players if possible. That may be tough though, given the most recent links emerging surrounding one Leeds star in particular.

Crysencio Summerville has been the star of Leeds’ push back towards the Premier League this season. However, that appears to have caught the eye of Bundesliga champions-elect Bayer Leverkusen for the summer.

According to a report from SportBILD, via SportWitness, Summerville is viewed as a target that would fit both technically and tactically in Xabi Alonso’s team. Given the fact that Leverkusen are fighting for trophies, it may be tough to keep hold of the Dutch winger.

The German giants have a track record of picking up talent that has impressed in the Championship, landing Nathan Tella following his loan spell with Burnley last season.

Summerville has already outlined his desire to be playing at the top level again, given his impressive campaign in the second tier. 17 goals and eight assists in 39 Championship appearances have outlined the threat he carries.

When discussing a possible return to the Premier League next season, the 22-year-old told Voetbal Primeur: “I hope so… That would be really nice.” Fortunately for Leeds, a contract extension in 2022 still puts the power in their hands.

Summerville’s current deal runs until 2026, meaning any potential deal will likely be on the club’s terms. However, failure to win promotion to the Premier League may naturally put them in a weaker position to negotiate a strong fee.

It outlines the importance of securing promotion to the top flight once again, mounting even more pressure on the final few weeks of the season.
