Club’s sporting director admits he likes £20m Tottenham player and wants to sign him

A club’s sporting director has admitted he’s an admirer of one Tottenham Hotspur player and would like to sign him.

It looks set to be a busy summer transfer window for Tottenham as they look to build on a positive campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

The Aussie boss currently has Spurs sitting in fourth place following a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Glenn Hoddle has already tipped Tottenham to pip Aston Villa to a Champions League spot.

Despite Postecoglou insisting that he isn’t bothered by the race for the top four, James Maddison is desperate to guide Spurs back to Europe’s top table.

Securing a place in the Champions League could be crucial for Spurs when it comes to their summer business.

Postecoglou has already shown to be a ruthless operator and has trimmed his squad significantly since his arrival last summer.

We’ve seen the likes of Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Davinson Sanchez head out the door. Spurs have failed to shift a few players, with Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence and Tanguy Ndombele all currently out on loan.

But Tottenham have been offered some hope that they could offload one of their loanees this summer.

Genoa sporting director likes Djed Spence

Spence completed a loan switch to Genoa in January as part of a deal for Tottenham to sign Radu Dragusin.

The 23-year-old was out of favour under Postecoglou following an unexpected return from his loan spell at Leeds United.

Now, Genoa’s sporting director Marco Ottolini has been speaking about the possibility of signing Spence permanently.

“I speak with Djed every week,” Ottolini told CaughtOffside. “We have created a good environment for him. We are trying to make him feel warm and welcome here, and this will then translate into his performances on the pitch. We want to give him the right conditions to perform.

“We still have seven games to go and we want to see what he can do. Personally, I like Djed and how he is doing, and how he is training.

“Of course, he can do more, and he knows this, but we are in contact with Spurs and will evaluate a deal over the next few months giving us time to understand our both position and Djed’s perspective on potentially staying here.”

Do Genoa have the option to buy Spence?

Following his switch to Genoa in January, it was reported at the time that the Serie A club will have the option to buy Spence this summer. Fabrizio Romano claimed the buy option is worth around £8.6 million.

Of course, Tottenham snapped up Spence for a fee worth £20 million back in the summer of 2022.

The wing-back had enjoyed an exceptional campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest beforehand but struggled to break into Antonio Conte’s side.

It’s fair to say the move just hasn’t worked out and Spence seems to have found an ideal place to continue his development in Genoa.

The Englishman has racked up nine appearances in Serie A and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move on permanently this summer.
