A Republican strategist on Thursday called out former President Donald Trump for trying to pivot on abortion even though the Supreme Court justices he appointed were the ones who through reproductive rights laws into chaos by overturning Roe v. Wade.
Appearing on CNN, GOP strategist Rina Shah whacked Trump for pledging that the 1864 abortion law now on the books in Arizona would get "fixed" without specifying how that would happen.
"Donald Trump is saying, 'We can fix this, it's gone too far in Arizona,'" she said. "Number one, that's a lie. What's he going to do? There's nothing he can do!"

She then highlighted exactly how extreme the 1864 law was, and she described it as "unsafe at every level" for women in the state given that it doesn't even have exceptions for cases of rape or incest.

She said that Trump understood how bad that looks in a swing state, but added that he "doesn't know what to do, so like usual, he's going to say something will happen, but it will not."
She added that a measure repealing the law entirely "will go on a ballot and Republicans will lose."
Democratic strategist Paul Begala then argued that any Trump attempts to "triangulate" on the issue by making it a states-rights matter were doomed to total failure.
"He has made such a hash of this," he said. "When we watch the state of [Alabama] outlaw IVF... when we watch the state of Arizona go back to an 1864 law, the state of Texas punishes abortion providers with 99 years in prison. After all that, who would say, 'Hey, let's let the states run things.' The states, at least some of them, are really cracking down.'"
